I. Background
[1] On March 2, 2023, the proceedings against Mr. Revenant in State of Ridgeway
v. RichardRenevant (RSC-CM-872) were stayed by consent, subject to conditions.
[2] On March 7, 2023, an application was filed by the State of Ridgeway in State
of Ridgeway v. RichardRenevant (RSC-CM-989) to declare the accused, Mr.
RichardRevenant in breach of his conditions and to lift the stay of proceedings.
[3] On the same day, I issued a summons for Mr. Revenant to appear and show
cause by March 9, 2023 at the latest, which was served onto Mr. Revenant and his
attorney the next day.
II. The Orders of March 10, 2023
[4] Neither Mr. Renevant nor his attorney appeared by March 10, 2023. I found
Mr. Renevant in breach of his conditions. Consistent with the terms of the stay by
consent entered on March 2, 2023, I entered the following orders verbally.
[5] I lifted the stay of proceedings entered on March 2, 2023. I accepted Mr.
Renevant’s plea of no contest. I entered convictions as to second-degree murder,
unlawful possession of a firearm, and vandalism. I sentenced Mr. Renevant to
imprisonment for a term of 90 minutes.
III. The Orders of March 11, 2023
[6] On March 11, 2023, Mr. Renevant appeared. On my own motion that appeared
to have been joined by the government, I set aside my orders of March 10, 2023 until
14:00 UTC-8 to allow Mr. Renevant to make his submissions through electronic means.
[7] Mr. Renevant made no submissions within the time allotted.
[8] I reinstated my orders of March 10, 2023.
